Green Living
Let’s save planet Earth!
We should reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. It’s the main cause of global warming, which brings disasters such as hurricanes, droughts, floods, melting of glaciers and extinction of species like the polar bears.

If you recycle one tonne of paper, the world will save:
  • 17 trees (they can absorb 250 pounds of carbon dioxide each year)
  • 380 gallons of oil
  • Three cubic yards of landfill space
  • 4,000 kilowatts of energy
  • 7,000 gallons of water
To date, småles have recycled over 225 tonnes of old newspapers.
Tips on Green Living
  1. Choose energy efficient electrical appliances.
  2. Use energy saving light bulbs.
  3. Unplug appliances after usage.

  4. Create a paperless working environment.
  5. Bring your own shopping bags and biodegradable plastic bags.
  6. Plant a tree – a tree absorbs 40 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.
  7. Borrow books from the library instead of buying new ones.
  8. Donate old toys, clothes, books, art supplies, etc. to charity.
  9. Pass old t-shirts to your mum to be used as kitchen cleaning rags.
  10. Cut out old magazine ads to be used as wrapping paper for small presents.
  11. Reuse wrapping paper, gift bags and bows.
  12. Whenever possible, print on both sides of the page.
  13. Reuse household items for storage or craftwork. E.g. empty jam jars can be made into snow globes or vases.
  14. Use reusable cloth napkins or handkerchief instead of a paper napkin.
  15. Take shorter showers.
  16. Use digital cameras to keep your photos digitally. Only print out your favourite photos.
  17. Use a fan instead of an air-conditioner. The energy used in an air-conditioner is sufficient to power 10 electric fans.
  18. If you need to use an air-conditioner, adjust the temperature to 25 degrees, which is the most energy efficient level.
  19. Choose to walk, cycle or take the bus to school instead of having your parents drive you in a car.
  20. Go for a meat-less (vegetarian) meal once a week.
