Light up your home with lovely flowers from plants. Some of these plants can also be used for cooking in the kitchen. Remember to have an adult’s help when you start your little garden.

Your starter kit
  • Bag of potting mix or soil
  • Seeds of the plant you’ve chosen (e.g. Sunflowers)
  • Plant label (you can make your own using ice-cream sticks)
  • Marker
  • Plastic pots
  • Egg cartons
  • Small garden shovel or trowel (spoons can work as well)
  • Watering can or spray gun
  • Gloves
Make sure the mix you buy is suitable for both seed sowing and potting. For germination, seeds must be kept moist, but must not get waterlogged or they will rot.

Plants that are easy to grow
  • Herbs and spices (holy basil and laksa leaves)
  • Fruits and vegetables (chilli, eggplant, ladies fingers, gourds, sweet potato and soya )
  • Flowers (morning glories and fragrant shrubs)
  • Greens (cactus and pandan leaves)

Other fun things to do
  • Scarecrow: Use ice-cream sticks, scraps of cloth, an old sock, newspapers for stuffing and markers to draw its face.
  • Compost: Dark soil made of organic materials like leaves, vegetable and fruit peelings as well as newspapers. Instructions on making compost can be found at www.smales.com.sg and www.nparks.gov.sg/gardening.
  • Unusual places: Alternative pots can be a reused 2-litre soft drink plastic bottle, milk cartons, unwanted jugs, cans, toy trucks or buckets.
  • Gardening journal: Take pictures, write down your gardening chores and track the growth of your plant.

How to make compost
Compost will help your plants grow big and strong! And it’s fun to make them. Just remember: you will need permission and help from the adults at home for this activity.
