Spotlight on Sweden
Find out more about the different cities and provinces in Sweden.

Lapland is a province in the northern part of Sweden. It is a huge place that occupies almost a quarter of Sweden’s surface area even though less than a million people live there. It is a beautiful province of vast wilderness. You can see snow topped mountains, enormous forests, lakes, valleys and beautiful landscapes.

Lapland is home to...
The world’s biggest ice hotel
The hotel is made of ice and snow. Because the hotel will melt after winter, it’s redesigned every year and it always looks different. Inside the hotel, there is a church, hotel, gallery, golf room, cinema and a bar. Guests sleep in warm sleeping bags on mattresses of wood and reindeer skins. How cool is that!

The northern lights
Winter is not always dark and gloomy in Lapland. On a clear night, the sky is set ablaze with magical swirling rays of greenish-blue lights. That is the beautiful blaze of the northern lights, or Aurora Borealis. The display every night is unique and unpredictable. The northern lights are typically seen between the months of September and March.

The midnight sun
Can you imagine the sun still shining at midnight? Well that’s what it is like during certain clear summer nights in Lapland. The sun remains visible above the horizon, meaning that Lapland never gets dark. In fact, in some northern areas, the sun remains visible for over 70 days!

This southern province is one of the largest in Sweden. It's made up of several "small lands", hence its name, Småland. As home to 740,000 people, Småland's most recognisable structures are its classic red Falun cottages.

This southern province is one of the largest in Sweden. It's made up of several "small lands", hence its name, Småland. As a home to 740,000 people, Småland's most recognisable structures are its classic red Falun cottages.

Småland is also filled with lush greenery. Imagine walking on soft moss through miles of forests. Along the way, you may stop to collect flowers and berries. You can also catch a glimpse of animals such as the roe deer and grouse grazing away.

The coastal region is just as breathtaking as the forested areas. There are roughly 5,000 lakes and lovely coastal islands around Småland. Doesn't this remind you of our own Småland magical forest?

Besides being Alex and Tampi's home, Småland is also home to some famous people. Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of IKEA, was born in Småland, where he later built the first IKEA store. Astrid Lingdren, author of popular children's series Pippi Longstocking, also grew up there.

Stockholm has come a long way since its beginnings as a defence base against pirates. Thanks to King Gustav Vasa, the city grew in size and trade. That's why the Swedish National Day is celebrated in memory of him. Today, Stockholm is one of the world's best places to live in!

There are many cool places to check out in Stockholm. The city is big on arts and culture as it has the most museums in the world. You can visit the world's oldest open-air museum, Skansen, the Royal Family's Drottningholm Palace and many other cultural places.

With a beautiful landscape and rich history, you'll find plenty of fun activities to enjoy in Stockholm.
